 Tax Credit

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax owed. For example, if you owe $800 in State income taxes and you donate up to $400 on a joint return or up to $200 on an individual return, you may subtract those amounts from your tax bill.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Tax Credits

What is a tax credit?

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax owed.  It should not be confused with a tax deduction, which only reduces your taxable income.

Who is eligible?

This tax credit is available to all Arizona taxpayers regardless of whether or not they have children in school. An individual can contribute and receive a tax credit for any amount up to $200; a couple filing jointly can contribute up to $400. For example, if you owe $800 on your tax bill, and you donate $400 on a joint return, your tax bill will be reduced to $400.

Do I have to donate the full $200 or $400?

No, you may donate up to $200 on an individual return or up to $400 on a joint return.  You may make smaller contributions throughout the year or a lump sum donation.

When is my contribution due?

Your contribution must be postmarked or received by December of the year in which you will be applying the tax credit.

Can a taxpayer receive a refund of these credits?

The credit may be used to reduce a tax liability to zero.   Any unused amounts may be carried forward for up to five consecutive taxable years.

Can I designate where I want my money to go?

Yes.  A contributor can choose a child’s school or a specific extra-curricular activity.  In cases where there is no specific designation for the donation, it goes into the school’s central tax credit fund.

What is an extracurricular activity?

“Extracurricular activity” refers to any optional, non-credit educational or recreational activity that supplements educational school programs. Activities such as sports, visual and performing arts, special programs, character building, field trips, outdoor education, gifted programs, or classroom enrichment programs can be funded with tax credit money.

Do I have to live within the Humboldt Unified School District?

No, any individual who pays Arizona State income tax can contribute, regardless of where he/she lives.
